Is ‘The Wirk’ a Norse Castle?

Sum awarded: £7,612

The Wirk, also known as Westness Castle, is an enigmatic tower on the Scottish island of Rousay. It has been interpreted as a 12th-century castle, a hall-house, and even a church tower. Dan Lee and Sarah Jane Gibbon’s project will carry out a combine geophysical survey, a drone survey, and excavation to unpick this site’s history.
